Frank Rechlin’s Painter’s Pride & Joy 1963 GMC

hat’s the old adage about a painter and his personal projects? Something along the lines of “never getting done”? Whatever it is, we’re here to dispel that pseudo proverb, as we present you with a legit painter’s pride: IKandy Paintworks proprietor Frank Rechlin’s 1963 GMC.

Teaming up with next door neighbor Tre 5 Customs (led by owner Jeremy Rice along with Hector Garcia, Travis Rawleigh, Brian Vowel, and Olin Glick) as he’s done with his own crew (Travis Hearning, Manny Rodriquez, and Scott Dafoe) on numerous projects each year, Frank decided back in November of 2019 that it was due time he put a set of wheels on the street for himself. Having recently painted two first-gen C10s at the time is what primarily biased his decision on what exactly he wanted to build—and with the help of his good friend Mark Shroeder, once the ball got rolling, it wouldn’t be long before “Borracho,” so aptly named after one late-night, inebriated conversation with his wife, Jaclyn, IKandy’s official shop truck, full came to fruition.

Once Frank and his crew had stripped the now big-window “knee-buster” down accordingly, the frame was shipped one door down for Jeremy et al at Tre 5 to do their thing. Chassis transformation began with the addition of front and rear Porterbuilt (PB Fab) Extreme Dropmembers, the likes of which received the following suspension setups: PB Fab tubular control arm IFS with CPP forged dropped spindles (mounting Baer six-piston brakes) and Slam Specialties airbags; PB Fab Watts link equipped tubular trailing arm setup (locating stock 12-bolt axle), also with Slam Specialties ‘bags and Baer binders. The modular front Dropmember, designed to use a modern Mustang-style rack-and-pinion, was fitted to accept a FiTech-injected 454 big-block (built by Kelley’s Machine and outfitted with an All American Billet serpentine) and Turbo 400 automatic. Exhaust was custom fabbed by Tre 5 using stainless tubing and mufflers supplied by Borla Performance.

Meanwhile, back at the paint and body cave (IKandy), Frank and crew were busy transforming the short-wheelbase Jimmy’s exterior. Though quite extensive, the short list of body mods includes: shaved bed seams/stake pockets and fender/hood seams, shaved mirrors and antenna (however, GSI door handles were installed and the OE vent windows retained). Speaking of the bed, the SWB Fleetside panels are courtesy Brother’s Trucks; Tre 5 handled the reworking as well as the inner modifications, including the air-actuated tonneau. Along with receiving a big-window conversion, the cab itself was retrofit with a Hart Fab recessed firewall as well, and weather-sealed with Precision Replacement Parts and fit with new glass by James Chamberlain at State 48.

Once Travis Hearning had the underlying bodywork handled, Frank did his “thing”, generously coating the GMC in Sherwin-Williams 2019 Volkswagen Kurkuma Yellow Metallic with contrasting candy gold powdercoated accents (by Pacific Coast Powder) on the bumpers, grille, and the 22/24-inch Intro Flow wheels. Manny Rodriguez prepped and laid down the color-matched bed liner, which only further adds to the well thought out exterior color theme. And yeah, that’s a lotta gold eye candy!

With the truck assembled and the 10th Annual Dino’s Git Down quickly approaching (the soft debut was the Git Down Mixer hosted by Tre 5 and IKandy Paintworks), it was all up to the assembly team followed by Steve Yiu/Elevated Design to handle the upholstery and JL Audio/Pioneer sound system. The truck’s bench seat and ididit column-topping steering wheel are courtesy TMI Products (color-matched with the accompanying interior sheetmetal); the instrumentation via Dakota Digital’s state-of-the-art HDX system; interior door handles courtesy All American Billet; and everything is powered up thanks to a Painless Performance harness wired by Tre 5.

And come November of this past year, on the eve of Dino’s Git Down literally blocks down the street from IKandy Paintworks, Frank’s pride and joy was revealed to all in attendance (and subsequently, to the rest of the world via social media of course!).
